Peacefully, with family by his side, at the Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce, Owen Sound, on Thursday, September 1st, 2016, in his 91st year. Lorne, loving husband of Mabel Sutherland-Smith, and the late Clara Klerks. Survived by his son Barry. Lorne will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews and step-children. Predeceased by his son Bruce, nephew Brian Shier, and sisters Marjorie Shier and Dorothy Mahon.
Lorne spent over 30 years in the teaching profession in Dufferin county, retiring in 1982. He has been an avid member of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association since 1983, where he helped to construct numerous bluebird nesting boxes. He enjoyed the outdoors and his greatest passion was driving around in his van with his wife Mabel, inspecting and maintaining his bluebird boxes. On two separate occasions, Lorne was recognized as the adult conservationist of the year and won the conservation pioneer award in 2008.
A graveside service will be held at Maplegrove Cemetery, Dundalk, on Saturday, September 10th, 2016 at 11:00am with Rev Kathy Underwood officiating. A reception will be held following the service at the Flesherton Legion, 14 Elizabeth Street, Flesherton, Ontario.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Breckenridge-Ashcroft Funeral Home, 241 9th Street West, Owen Sound, 519 376 2326.
Memorial donations to the CNIB, the Kemble-Sarawak United Church, or the Residential Hospice of Grey Bruce would be appreciated by the family.
